For more than half a century, Special Forces and CIA legend Billy Waugh dedicated his life to tracking down and eliminating America's most virulent enemies. Operating from the darkest shadows and most desolate corners of the world, he made his mark in many of the most important operations in the annals of US Spec Ops. He spent seven and a half years behind enemy lines in Vietnam as a member of a covert group of elite commandos. He trailed Osama Bin Laden in Khartoum in the early '90s and would have killed the terrorist kingpin if his superiors had allowed it. And at the age of 72, he marched through the frozen high plains of Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Hunting the Jackal is the astonishing true account of the singular career of a courageous soldier in his nation's shadow wars - including his pivotal role in the previously untold story of the capture of the most infamous and elusive assassin in history, Carlos the Jackal.

Hunting the Jackal A Special Forces and CIA Soldier Fifty Years on the Frontlines of the War Against Terrorism (Audible Audio Edition) Billy Waugh Tim Keown Joe Barrett Tantor Audio Books

An outstanding book. The more I read and meet those who serve in top level Military units, the more I realize the mindset of these warriors. These men believe, as Billy Waugh says, If America is at war, I want to be a part of it.
I'm sure SGM Waugh could write 10 books and still not cover all the actions, engagements, and operations he was involved in. In "Hunting the Jackal" he mainly focuses on the two most famous (or infamous) targets he tracked during his career. Bin Laden and Carlos the Jackal. In addition, he goes into some detail about his service in the U.S. Army, the majority of which was in Special Forces, including his time in the "Studies and Observation Group". This is a must read for anyone interested in Military history, SOG, Special Forces, and / or covert operations.
I listened to the audiobook version of this, available on Audible. Anyone who has experience with audiobooks knows the narrator is vital to the successful presentation of a book. Joe Barrett was an outstanding choice for narrating this book. He either has, or is able to emulate, a perfect Texas accent and attitude. Mr. Barrett is either a military man, or did some intensive interviews with Billy Waugh, because he did an excellent job with acronyms, military jargon, and nicknames. This is a fairly minor detail, and doesn't make or break a book. However, for those of us who spent 20+ years in the Army, it can add to, or take away from the overall enjoyment of a book. Excellent job Joe Barrett!

Hunting the Jackal A Special Forces and CIA Soldier Fifty Years on the Frontlines of the War Against Terrorism (Audible Audio Edition) Billy Waugh Tim Keown Joe Barrett Tantor Audio Books Reviews

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I found it much more of a historical account of the spy business and special ops rather than merely a personal story. Certainly Billy Waugh is a legendary and intriguing character and that side of the story is itself fascinating. The combination of Waugh's personal experience and the detailed, first hand accounts of hunting Carlos "The Jackal" as well as the lesser known background in "Hunting bin Laden" makes this an important book. A first hand account of how special forces and intel work at the ground, grubby hands level. Highly recommended.
I rate this book at the highest. I know the writer and know that he is one of America's true heroes, a fine resolute, tough individual who, when he sets out to accomplish a goal, accomplishes it and usually more. you can depend that all that you read in this book is factual and it is extremely interesting to see how he accomplished bringing down Carlos the Jackal and maintaining vigilance on Osama Bin Laden. Billy accomplished this later in life, after a distinguished career in the US Special Forces and MACVSOG in Vietnam. I recommend this to anyone who wants to see how a true aritst accomplishes a covert mission.
An incredible story about an incredible man and his military/intelligence career. At times it reads like a novel and you have to remind yourself that this is a real man. The story spans like five decades of service beginning in Korea, hitting Vietnam and ending in the Middle East in various capacities. In this book was the first time I'd heard of Billy Waugh. My hats off to him though. I gave it a 4 and not a 5 star simply due to the bragging that goes on. Maybe I should have thought more about the saying, "if you can do it, it ain't bragging". Overall, a good read.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It was well written, and the author gives a vivid account of how difficult things were for SOG in the Vietnam War.Mr Waugh vividly tells how SOG teems were often greatly outnumbered, and were often ready and waiting for US Special Forces, and how difficult it was to infiltrate and exfiltrate from places such as Laos. The anti war protesters(I remember them only too well) painted a picture of poor peasants fighting completely unaided a monstrous super power, but from what the author says, they had an enormous amount of help from China and Russia, including troops on the ground. I suspect that very many operations by SOG were compromised by Communist Spies in South Vietnam. That is just my opinion based on what Billy Waugh has described. He does not suggest that. The latter part of the book concerns his time as an Independent Contractor for the CIA. He was sent to the Sudan and gives vivid accounts of what it was like locating Carlos the Jackal. Excellent book written by a very remarkable man.
I got tired of my music CD collection and radio in the car so I listen to books on CD when driving. This "book" is a very exciting "read". The author pulls no punches and tells it like it really was...and is. Having read 100s of books relating to combat and the people who lived it, this is the best I've ever found with all the gory details. It takes quite a man to have lived that kind of life and we owe our thanks to the men and women who have and are fighting our battles behind the scenes with no other thanks other than their own satisfaction of a job well done. Be sure you know what you are buying though. I received the CD in MP3 format which is ok with me because I can transfer the data to other media, computers etc. but if your CD player won't handle MP3s, you will be disappointed.
