Don't Rush Me Selected Poems of Dwain Preston Dwain Preston 9781329828759 Books

As cliche as it inevitably sounds, I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. This collection of lovingly written poems helped me escape my technology-dominated world for a couple precious hours to a well-lived life of farming, gardening, schoolteaching, writing, reading, laughing, and dancing. Preston's writing style is simple and evocative, and he deftly transitions from serious topics of suffering and death, to describing the natural beauty of a songbird, the infectious laughter of children, and an unforgettable backyard outhouse. As a result, I oftentimes found myself alternating between crying and laughing, smiling and gasping. My favorite poem, The Trees of My Life, is particularly moving. It should be read and re-read by all poetry lovers.

The heartfelt introduction, written by Preston's four daughters, is more than just a brief biography of their beloved dad "Doc" and his work--it also serves as an 80th birthday message to their father, since the four of them worked together to gather, edit, and publish his poems as a surprise gift to the author. As a writer and editor myself, I cannot imagine a more moving, or more appropriate, gift to a lifelong weaver of words like Preston. Sincere thanks to Preston's daughters for compiling this book; it is one I will undoubtedly enjoy for years to come.

Don't Rush Me Selected Poems of Dwain Preston Dwain Preston 9781329828759 Books Reviews

Poems are poignant but easy to read. Some are fun and some are sad, but all clearly show the author's love of family, nature, and life in general.
These poems are lovely. They are a beautiful testament to nature, family and generally enjoying the things which surround us every day. Some of them are about simple, everyday experiences (The Blue Jay) and some are about incredibly beautiful experiences (Southern Memories) and some are just plain fun (Little Red Flyer Wagon). If you like good poetry please enjoy this work~
There’s no way I can review this book with any kind of objectivity. Back in the eighties, Dwain “Doc” Preston was my best teacher of all things literature. He taught me—before him mainly a math & science guy—how to appreciate what I read, how to write a poem (sonnets!), how to write a short story (conflict!), how to write an essay (5 paragraphs!). I’ve been privy to pieces of his work for many years. (I still remember one class where he mixed his own sonnet amongst works by Shakespeare. The class voted his best!) Still, I am so glad that he finally has a book to call his own that I can put on the shelf next to my other favorite poets.

Over the years and to this day, I’m proud to say we’ve been colleagues and friends. I still write myself and, though I have my strengths, I’ve never been able to master the light touch and gentle humor that Doc seems to produce so easily. His poems recall rural life, nature, and family with a joyful nostalgia that I enjoy reading. In fact, I read a lot of poetry and there are many poets with more fame out there whose work I would put down before I would put down Don’t Rush Me. It gets my highest recommendation.
Awesome read!
Doc is a wonderful writer!
Doc Preston offers us a loving glimpse of his life in these series of poems. So enjoyable.
There's a fertile swath of wisdom and literary talent that runs across the middle section of Illinois producing such poetic artists as Carl Sandburg, Edgar Lee Masters, and Vachel Lindsay. "Doc" Preston happily nuzzles up to that literary fraternity with his collection of poems and songs, Don't Rush Me. This review is more than a little biased since Preston writes of the things I once knew . . . even the smells of a Central Illinois farm, but the appeal of his book is universal, I think, in that he speaks of and for all of us.
